ZELENI VENAC: A LIVING MARKET
Belgrade, Serbia

Zeleni Venac is not only a historic marketplace but also a living organ at the very heart of Belgrade. Since 1847, it has been in continuous operation, making it the city’s oldest active market. Its name “green wreath” recalls its past, evoking stories of taverns, meeting places, and generations of people who came here to buy, to trade, and to talk.
Over time, the market has grown into both a social and architectural landmark. Its hall, surrounding buildings, and the rhythm of daily activity reflect the city’s layers of history and transformation. The atmosphere combines the vitality of a traditional European farmers’ market with the unique spirit of Belgrade itself.
This photographic work focuses on the architectural language of Zeleni Venac, its colors, forms, light, and structures, but above all on the people who shape it each day: long-standing vendors, elderly pensioners, young parents, students, and passers-by. Together they create the pulse of a place where tradition and everyday life continue to meet.
