ECHOES OF MODERNISM
Skopje, North Macedonia

The Gradski Trgovski Centar (GTC) is a shopping center located in the heart of Skopje, designed by Živko Popovski and constructed between 1969 and 1973 following an International Design Competition. It holds the distinction of being both the oldest and the largest shopping mall in the capital of North Macedonia. Unlike other shopping centers, the GTC is state-owned and features open entrances on all sides, making it a central thoroughfare for people commuting through the city every day. Its central location ensures easy access, whether on foot or by public transportation.
With its long-established history as a popular destination, the GTC offers a wide range of international and local brands, alongside supermarkets, bakeries, cafés, and restaurants.
In her photographic work, Oxana Guryanova focuses on the architectural features of the shopping center, paying particular attention to colors and shapes. At the same time, she highlights the somewhat deserted atmosphere of a place that was once the most popular shopping center in Skopje.
